  • Our Higher Learning Commission outcomes were terrific. We are being recommended for ten years re-accreditation (the maximum allowable). The team was especially impressed by the Program Advisory Committees (PACs), the General Advisory Committee (GAC), the Board of Directors, and the student's group. Additionally the team was impressed by the level of knowledge and engagement throughout the institution by all employees. The team leader and I met before the final briefing to go over all the results and the next steps. Although they were not read at the out briefing, the team leader’s Advancement section notes also mentioned our bright future, the talented faculty and staff that will carry us through our next phases of growth and change, and the high levels of camaraderie and enthusiasm present throughout the institution. We look forward to reading their full draft report in a few weeks.
  • It is official; Linn Schroll is the newest member of I-CAR’s Industry Segment Advisory Council for Education at the National Level. Congratulations Linn!

  • MATC students and employees raised $2,101.81 for United Way this year. The program that contributed the most was Welding with 18 students raising $212.00 followed by EP&D raising $141.42.

  • Congratulations to Leslie Snead for being the winner of the United Way “employee contributor” drawing winning a meal for two at 4-Olives Restaurant.

  • Our Electric Power and Distribution class went through the paces yesterday when they did the first-ever hands-on NOCTI assessment of Lineman Skills. As you may remember, MATC faculty Brent and Rex, with their Program Advisors, and Dr. Rich Fogg created the nationally distributed assessment instrument and was the first to send students through the process. We had many PAC member volunteers along with their equipment on campus acting as test proctors and observers. A hearty thank you to all who helped to bring the national-level attention to MATC.

Everyone please have a safe and fun Halloween and Happy Birthday Mom

This post is dedicated to our little nine year old Punkin who passed away last Friday. She will be deeply missed.

  • The Fall Open House was a huge success. We had over 450 visitors to include lots of families and local dignitaries. We even had 13 people submit applications to enter MATC. It is always such a joy to be able show others why we love doing what we do here. Thanks to all students and employees who help make the day a success.

  • We had a good interview on KMAN News Radio 1350 AM on Wednesday. We had one caller phone in to ask how he and others could help the College achieve many of its dreams. He had just finished describing how MATC had “saved his son’s life” by giving him a chance to Learn a Living at MATC when all else had failed.

  • Well the HLC team members begin arriving tomorrow and by Monday the full four person team will be on campus. They will stay until late Wednesday morning at which time they will out-brief everyone as to how we fared. Here it the team roster:

Dr. Frances M. Hendrix (Team Chair)Vice President for Academic Affairs, Rose State College, Midwest City, OK; Ms. Mary Therese (Mimi) Elwell, Professor of Mathematics, Lake Michigan College, St. Joseph, MI; Mr. Brad Piazza, Dean, Business Division, Waukesha County Technical College, Pewaukee, WI; Dr. Roger Stacy, Ponca City, OK.

  • You know that I often save this last little part of the memo for things going on in my life. Well it’s has been a tough month and, while Brenda is healing well from her unexpected surgery, our little 9 yr. old Cocker Spaniel, Punkin, is in the hospital with kidney failure and obviously not feeling very well. We sure would appreciate any prayers you may wish to give for her comfort and recovery. Thank you

P.S. I sure hope the old French adage “Jamais deux sans trios” (never two without three) does not come to pass.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

NOTE: If you wish to see any of the pictures clearer, click on them and they should blow up to full size.

  • We received a note back from the State Treasurer’s office this week: “Thank you for hosting us on campus last week President Edleston. I added a few of the pictures from our visit to our website as well: http://kansasstatetreasurer.com/prodweb/about_us/photogallery.php

  • Barb Wenger and I attended a luncheon hosted by the Kansas Bioscience Authority last Monday. We were pleased to find MATC acknowledged a number of times for our part in the preparation and continued education of laboratory technicians in support of NBAF and others. In fact our College, along with KU, K-State, and KBA was featured on the presentation’s opening slide.

  • Marilyn and I interviewed Friday for a magazine article in a science research publication that will be featuring the synergy in Manhattan related to NBAF and MATC’s lab tech expansion and the multilateral relationships to achieve support and funding for it. Once published, we will share the article with all.

  • At last night’s Board of Director’s meeting we had the privilege of honoring two individuals whose selfless efforts have helped transform our landfill/ wooded area into a park and walking trail. While many of us have pitched in, Monty Enright and Mr. Linn Blecha have spent so much time in our woods clearing brush and creating a walking trail that no one has been able to keep count of the hours. Upon Monty’s recommendation and approval by the BOD the wooded area on the East side of MATC has been named Blecha Park at M.A.T.C. and upon approval of the BOD the trail, which will someday be sprinkled with benches and picnic tables, has been named in honor of Monty Enright. Congratulations to both individuals and keep up the good work.

  • We had our all Staff BBQ at the EP&D site Thursday. Brent had a chance to discuss the site and its uses while Tracy, our expert scrounge, was able to solicit enough donated food so everyone could get their fill for $.80 per person.

  • If we are collecting blood then it must be getting close to Halloween. The goal for last Wednesday’s blood drive was 35 units and we were able to collect 51 units. Way to go SGO and Student Services for making this drive so successful! During the blood drive the SGO also hosted their fall BBQ in the East parking lot. A good time was had by all and, as usual, the mega teeter-totter was a big hit.

  • The annual “Representative Tom Hawk Invitational Open Golf Outing” was loads of fun. Pictured here is Tom sinking a put to place his group in second place overall.
  • The BT House coming along nicely. It is located at the south end of Highland Ridge Road directly behind last year’s house.

  • Jane reaffirmed her grandmother status for the third time last Wednesday with the birth of Alaise Rose, 6 lbs 4 oz.. Congratulations to your Son Al and daughter-in-law Haley.

  • Coming up: MATC Fall Open House will be held on Thursday, October 21st, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Tell everyone you know to come on out and spend a little time looking around.

  • Upcoming events: Chamber of Commerce retreat Tuesday; KBOR on Wednesday; Vet Tech meeting on Friday and, of course, or HLC Re-accreditation visit starting the 25th.

  • Congratulations to Barb Sollner (formerly Anderson) on her marriage last week. I understand that she is floating around the Caribbean on her honeymoon, hopefully avoiding all the tropical weather.

  • Trysta Williams and her sister Tara Claussen (Mark’s wife) ran in their first (and possibly last) Marathon last weekend. 26.2 miles in the Waddell & Reed Marathon in Kansas City. They made it in five and a half hours. Congratulations

  • Students are gearing up for this year’s flag football tournament. EP&D is hoping to retain the trophy, but we will see.

  • We heard last night from Helen Wimsatt that the International (yes, International) Electrical Lineman’s Rodeo competition was won this year by IBEW 304 AND they placed 5th overall and 1st in the contractor division. They are all Westar Employees and MATC graduates. Way to go guys!

  • Finally, I would like to express my heart-felt thanks to everyone who expressed their care and concern during my wife Brenda’s recent unscheduled surgery. She is doing well and returned to work part-time Monday. Thank you for the cards, flowers, stuffed animals, fruit basket, and big home-made cake. You all have been very kind.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

  • Kansas State Treasurer Dennis McKinney paid us a visit on Wednesday morning. After a brief meeting, where we visited about a more Global level of technical education, he and his aide Aaron Otto took a tour hosted by Justin Pfeifer and our Student Senate President, Brent McKeeman. While on tour we were joined by Kansas Representative Tom Hawk and later by MATC Board of Directors member Dick Green. Mr. McKinney is, and always has been, a staunch supporter of technical education. Pictured here in our Dental Hygiene operatory from left to right are Justin, Dennis, Brent, Aaron, and me.

  • The Kansas State Collegian reporter Daniel Stewart did a wonderful job featuring MATC in Wednesday’s edition of the paper. Here is a link to the story: http://www.kstatecollegian.com/news/manhattan-area-technical-college-prepares-for-lab-industry-demand-1.2356315

  • We’d like to welcome two new employees to MATC; Richard Holman, Network Administrator and Denise Coffman, Custodian. We’d also like to congratulate Michael King on his title change to Director of Information Technology and Barb Wenger for her job reclassification from Allied Health Distance Learning Coordinator to Director of Biosciences.

  • This month’s traveling exhibit at the Manhattan Area Technical College Library is the Dust Bowl in Kansas. I know for a fact that we have had a number of visitors including the “Mature Methodists”, as they call themselves, who have come by to see the exhibit. We hope that more people will take advantage of the convenience and free admission to the exhibits as we feature more of these traveling displays.

  • The Fourth annual “Representative Tom Hawk Invitational Open Golf Outing” is being held tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. Anyone wanting a morning of fun and/or to express our appreciation for the wonderful work Tom does for us at the State Capitol is welcome to join us at Stagg Hill golf course. Please let Ron Bell know if you can make it.

  • Coming up: MATC Fall Open House will be held on Thursday, October 21st, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Tell everyone you know to come on out and spend a little time looking around.

    Have a great weekend everyone.
