This week, the Kansas Board of Regents approved two programs for MATC.  The first has been in place for a few years as a shared program with Seward CC.  The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Medical Laboratory Technician will now be operating as our own stand-alone version of the degree with an enhanced focus on our regional laboratory needs.

The second degree is the AAS in Technical Studies.  This special degree allows a student to combine multiple majors to create a degree to fit their professional technical needs, a company's specific needs, or to simply enhance one's own skills in multiple areas and obtain a credential.   One unique aspect of this AAS is that we were able to get it approved for all 26 two-year colleges in the State of Kansas at one time.  Imagine that many colleges agreeing on one thing...truly rare.

You may have seen where we have been selected in the top 10% of U.S. two-year colleges and therefore eligible for the Aspen Institute's Prize for Community College Excellence?  Eight out of 26 Kansas
colleges have been deemed eligible for The Aspen Prize. Kansas is one of the leading states in the nation, surpassed only by Texas and Florida, in the number of colleges qualified to compete for part of $1 million to reward excellence at two-year institutions that have outstanding academic and work-force outcomes.  We have entered stage two as we try to win a portion of the prize.  Whether that occurs or not we are pleased to know that our efforts are recognized and that others can see what we continue to tout; that we do a terrific job of preparing students for work.

Our Summer projects keep rolling along.  The renovation of the Computer Aided Drafting lab area is moving ahead with the installation of under the floor electrical last week and carpeting today.

At the same time, with the three modulars in place, the contractors are working to connect the utilities and prepare the insides for occupancy.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Sorry, I couldn't wait until next week.
MATC hit a milestone this month; we passed the 1,000 student headcount threshold!  That equates to 130% growth since our 2004 separation from the USD.

I'll be in Wichita tomorrow so, have a great weekend if I don't see you.
