Here are our construction/renovation project updates:

The modular buildings are in place and ready to run.  While there are a few small details yet to attend to, we have light, A/C, water and gas where needed.  Here's a quick list of rooms:
  • 401 - Chemistry Laboratory
  • 402 - Micro-Biology/Biotechnology Laboratory
  • 403 - Faculty Offices and Foundation Office
  • 404 - Faculty Offices
  • 405 - Restrooms/Storage
  • 406 - Storage
  • 407 - General Education/Lecture Room
  • 408 - General Education/Lecture Room
  • 409 - Mathematics
  • 410 - English/Communications Classroom/Lab
The West parking lot is being poured and the rest of the parking areas are being prepared for repainting and rearranging.  Here is a map of the new parking configuarations.  Everyone will receive a parking brochure and be issued parking stickers.  Staff and Student stickers will be required and persons violating parking regulations will be ticketed and fined.  I know this  may sound harsh but there will be plenty of parking (for now) for people to have a space within their designated alots.
A wall has been added in the Dental Hygiene reception area to accomodate two more faculty members within an office.  This will allow us to house the rest of the DH faculty needed for year two of the program.
The Computer Aided Drafting Lab looks great.  The carpeting and underfloor wiring is in and a dias has been placed at the South wall for better instructor oversight of the lab area.

We are dissappointed to find out that John Ratzenberger had to cancel his trip to Kansas.  He was coming at our invitation to talk with Kansas leaders about keeping manufacturing jobs in the USA and the importance of technical education. Perhaps, if his schedule permits, we can get him here next year.

The six technical colleges held our first KATC Summer Leadership Academy last week.  Representatives from all of the colleges met to discuss campus safety and security as a group and then went to break-out sessions for thier disciplines.  The sessions included Student Services, Financial Aid, Academic Affairs, Business, HR, IT, and Foundations.  We have received exceelnt feedback and hope to repeat this exercise twice each year from now on.  The collaboration, and some commiseration, are great for our people.

We held a League for Innovation Exploration Retreat here this week.  Dr. Dana Grove, Executive VP and COO of Johnson CCC came to answer questions we had regarding the process and personality of a true "Learning College".  We also discussed other resource available through the League for Innovation in the Community College.  The basic premise of the Learning College is that when you are making decisions instituinally your always ask yourselves two questions: 1.  Does this action/decision improve learning, and 2. How do you know?    More to come...

We have been working on the next Strategic Plan framework this summer and meet again this afternoon on another section.  After this framwork is built everyone associated with the College will have an opportunity to provide feedback and input to help us align this plan with our theme from the next several years:  "Change -- Growth -- Development"

We are also in the midst of  reviewing all MATC policys and making updates and corrections as needed.  This will be available to all for review and implementation in mid-August when the Faculty return.

More sad news...next week is the last of our four-day/40 hour weeks.  Oh well, shorter days will be nice too.

Have a great, safe, and hopefully cool weekend.

We have a number of new faces on board this summer: Bret Hoshaw, Network Administrator; Dorothy Soldan, Healthcare Training Coordinator; and Tarla Hanson, Student Services Clerk. Coming up in August Cheryl Jones Seitz, Dental Hygiene Instructor; and Frank Avila, HVAC Instructor will join us.  We are still interviewing for an Information and Network Technology instructor and a Project manager for our Instructional Division.

Speaking of this August, can you believe that the Summer is half over?  Things out here have been very busy with classes, construction, and renovations.  In addition, it seems like a steady stream of people in Student Services getting tours, receiving advise, and registering for classes.

We were contacted by Mr. Jamie Johnson, Director of the Office of National Laboratories, and had a great conversation about our new programs and our plans for the future.  He is pleased with our response, to date, in preparation for the arrival of NBAF and will be making more frequent contact as we get closer to the lab opening.

Brenda and I took a vacation last week and stayed here in the area.  I believe we call those staycations now.  We took advantage of the dry, but hot, weather and played 176 holes of golf at several of the local courses.  Although I do like to wake up to the sound of the ocean while on vacation we did had a terrific time right here.  Of course we joked about this as being practice for retirement.
